Hinge Neighbors’ Events

How We Create Change

We are actively hosting events in our community to help our neighbors. These events aren’t about us, they are about putting our years’ worth of experience to good use as we raise our neighbors’ voices and help them to be heard.

Past Events

Hinge Neighbors holds regular events to help our neighbors however they need. From meetings to murals and webinars, we are here to help people come together as a cohesive group.

Scio Street Talks

Encouraging the community to be a part of his illustrating and thought process, Hinge Neighbors Vice President and artist Shawn Dunwoody talks through what’s on his and downtown Rochester’s minds.

Live on the Loop

Composers’ Crossing

The youth of Rochester came together to help us celebrate a neighborhood that has stood for more than 100 years. With the help of celebrated local artist, Shawn Dunwoody, we created a “Hall of Fame,” to remember past and present Lewis Street neighbors.

This community-wide, inclusive event celebrated the upcoming Inner Loop North highway removal and the reconnection of Rochester’s 16th ward. Soon, the Inner Loop will no longer divide this neighborhood! With the help of AARP, we closed off the Scio Street Bridge and hosted a day full of music, games, activities, and food trucks while we placed fruit trees, picnic tables, and wooden benches along the bridge.

Composers’ Crossing is a community beautification movement designed to convert a four-way intersection in downtown Rochester, NY into a work of art. Featured in the Washington Post, Composers’ Crossing 2.0 reimagined the community-painted crosswalk with playable piano keys.

Internationally renowned artist Shawn Dunwoody and W. Michelle Harris, Associate Professor of RIT’s School of Interactive Games and Media, used interactive technology to allow the keys to “play” a musical note.

Human-Centered Public Places

Respectable housing, inviting streetscapes, walkability, green spaces, and social/cultural activities are hallmarks of downtown living. We are focused on raising voices to make neighborhood life accessible to all.
